Addiction in Older Adults

A Growing but Hidden Problem

Substance use disorders among older adults are a growing public health concern that is frequently overlooked. As the baby boomer generation ages, rates of addiction among people over 60 have risen significantly. Many older adults develop substance problems later in life, often triggered by retirement, loss of a spouse, chronic pain, social isolation, or declining health. Others have struggled with addiction for decades.

Unique Risk Factors

Older adults face specific risk factors that make substance use particularly dangerous. Age-related changes in metabolism mean that the body processes substances more slowly, increasing sensitivity and risk of overdose. Interactions between substances and prescription medications are common and can be life-threatening. Additionally, symptoms of substance use — confusion, falls, memory problems — are often mistakenly attributed to aging rather than recognized as signs of a treatable condition.

Barriers to Treatment

Stigma, shame, and generational attitudes can prevent older adults from seeking help. Many grew up in an era when addiction was seen as a moral failing rather than a medical condition. Family members may be reluctant to confront an aging parent or grandparent about their substance use. Healthcare providers may fail to screen for addiction in older patients. These barriers mean that many older adults suffer in silence when effective help is available.

It Is Never Too Late

Recovery is possible at any age. Research shows that older adults often respond very well to treatment, particularly when programs are tailored to their needs and delivered with sensitivity to their life experiences.
