The Serenity Prayer

The Prayer That Changed Millions of Lives

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” These words, attributed to theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, have become the most recognized prayer in recovery. Recited at virtually every 12-step meeting worldwide, the Serenity Prayer distills the essence of recovery philosophy into a single, powerful request.

Acceptance: The First Gift

The prayer begins with acceptance because acceptance is where recovery begins. Accepting that one has an addiction, that certain things are beyond personal control, that the past cannot be changed, and that other people cannot be forced to change — these acts of acceptance are profoundly liberating. They free the recovering person from the exhausting and futile effort to control the uncontrollable.

Courage: The Second Gift

While acceptance addresses what cannot be changed, courage addresses what can. It takes courage to seek treatment, to be honest, to make amends, to change destructive patterns, and to build a new life. The prayer acknowledges that change is frightening and asks for the strength to act in spite of fear. Courage in recovery is not the absence of fear but the willingness to move forward anyway.

Wisdom: The Third Gift

Perhaps the most challenging aspect of the Serenity Prayer is the request for wisdom to distinguish between what can and cannot be changed. This wisdom develops over time through experience, self-reflection, and guidance from others further along the path. It is the wisdom to know when to fight and when to surrender, when to speak and when to listen, when to hold on and when to let go. This discernment is at the heart of mature recovery.
