Spirituality in Recovery

What Is Spirituality in Recovery?

Spirituality encompasses any practice or belief connecting a person to something greater than themselves. For some, this is God or a religious tradition. For others, it may be nature, community, or the recognition that life has meaning beyond individual desires. The Twelve Steps describe this as a “Power greater than ourselves.”

Why Spirituality Matters

Addiction is often described as a spiritual malady — a disease of disconnection. Spiritual growth addresses this by fostering hope, purpose, gratitude, and belonging. Research consistently shows that people with a strong spiritual foundation have better recovery outcomes.

Spiritual Practices

Prayer, meditation, mindfulness, journaling, time in nature, creative expression, service to others, and faith communities all support recovery. The key is finding practices that resonate personally and engaging with them consistently.

Spirituality for Everyone

Spirituality is accessible to everyone — including atheists, agnostics, and those hurt by organized religion. It requires openness to growth and meaning beyond self-centered thinking. At ORTC, we honor each client’s spiritual path without imposing any belief system.
