STDs & Substance Abuse

The Connection Between Substance Use and STDs

Substance use significantly increases the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Drugs and alcohol impair judgment and lower inhibitions, leading to risky sexual behaviors. Injection drug use carries additional risks of bloodborne infections including HIV and hepatitis C through shared needles and equipment.

Common STDs Associated with Substance Use

People with substance use disorders are at elevated risk for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, and HPV. Many of these infections can be asymptomatic in early stages, meaning individuals may unknowingly transmit them. Regular testing is essential, particularly for those who have engaged in high-risk behaviors during active addiction.

Prevention and Testing

Prevention starts with awareness and honest self-assessment. Comprehensive substance abuse treatment should include education about STD risks, access to testing, and support for safer practices. Many treatment centers, including ORTC, incorporate health screenings as part of the intake process. There is no shame in getting tested — it is an act of self-care and responsibility.

Treatment and Recovery

Most STDs are treatable, and many are curable. Living with a chronic condition like HIV or hepatitis C is manageable with proper medical care. Recovery from substance use provides the clarity and motivation to address health concerns neglected during active addiction. At ORTC, our medical team ensures comprehensive care addressing both addiction and overall physical health.
