Signs of an Opioid Overdose

Recognizing overdose signs saves lives. Look for: extremely small “pinpoint” pupils, unconsciousness or inability to be awakened, slow, shallow, or stopped breathing, choking or gurgling sounds, blue or gray skin (especially lips and fingertips), and a limp body. If you suspect an overdose, call 911 immediately, administer naloxone (Narcan) if available, and place the person in the recovery position.

Naloxone (Narcan) Information

Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. It is available without a prescription in many states and is carried by most first responders. If you or someone you know is at risk of opioid overdose, consider keeping naloxone on hand. Many pharmacies, health departments, and community organizations provide naloxone and training at no cost.
