Substance use disorders and suicide are deeply connected. People with addiction are significantly more likely to experience suicidal thoughts and to die by suicide. Substances impair judgment, increase impulsivity, intensify depression, and lower the threshold for acting on suicidal thoughts. Alcohol alone is involved in approximately one-quarter of all suicides.
Warning signs include talking about wanting to die or being a burden, withdrawing from friends and activities, giving away possessions, increased substance use, extreme mood swings, expressing hopelessness, and researching methods of self-harm. If you notice these signs, take them seriously and seek help immediately.
Suicidal thoughts are a symptom of a treatable condition, not a permanent state. With proper support — including crisis intervention, mental health treatment, and addiction recovery — people who have experienced suicidal ideation go on to live meaningful, fulfilling lives. At ORTC, our clinical team screens for suicidal risk and connects clients with specialized resources. You are not alone, and help is always available.
If you or someone you love is struggling, ORTC offers confidential, compassionate treatment. Call us today.
