The Twelve Steps Explained

A Program of Recovery

The Twelve Steps were published in 1939 in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and have since been adapted by dozens of fellowships worldwide. They provide a structured path from admitting powerlessness over addiction through spiritual awakening and service to others. The Steps are suggested principles that have produced recovery for millions.

The Journey Through the Steps

Steps One through Three establish the foundation: admitting powerlessness, believing in restoration, and deciding to seek guidance. Steps Four through Seven involve self-examination: moral inventory, sharing it with another, becoming ready for change, and humbly asking for removal of defects. Steps Eight and Nine address relationships through amends. Steps Ten through Twelve focus on maintenance: continued self-examination, prayer and meditation, and carrying the message.

Spiritual, Not Religious

The Steps are spiritual but do not require any religious faith. “God as we understood Him” leaves room for each individual’s understanding. People of all faiths and no faith have found the Steps effective.

The Steps and Professional Treatment

At ORTC, we recognize the Steps as a valuable complement to clinical treatment. While our primary approach centers on medications for opioid use disorders and evidence-based counseling, many clients find that incorporating 12-step principles provides additional structure, community, and support.
