The Twelve Promises are found on pages 83-84 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. They describe transformative changes people in recovery can expect as they work the steps. Read at meetings worldwide, they offer hope to newcomers and serve as a touchstone for those further along the path.
They include: knowing a new freedom and happiness; not regretting the past nor wishing to shut the door on it; comprehending serenity and knowing peace; seeing how experience can benefit others; losing feelings of uselessness and self-pity; losing interest in selfish things; having self-seeking slip away; seeing attitude and outlook change; losing fear of people and economic insecurity; and intuitively knowing how to handle situations that used to baffle us.
The Big Book states, “Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us — sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.” Millions of people in recovery attest to their truth.
The Promises emerge naturally from recovery work — from honesty, humility, service, and spiritual growth. At ORTC, we have seen them come alive in countless lives, and we believe they are available to everyone willing to do the work.
