Religion & Spirituality in Recovery

Faith and Healing

For many people in recovery, religious faith and spiritual practice are foundational to their healing. Across virtually every religious tradition, themes of redemption, forgiveness, transformation, community, and hope resonate deeply with the recovery experience. Whether through Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Native American spirituality, or any other tradition, faith can provide meaning, purpose, and strength during the most challenging times.

Religion in 12-Step Programs

The Twelve Steps reference “God as we understood Him” and “a Power greater than ourselves,” which has both drawn people of faith and raised questions from those without religious beliefs. It is important to understand that 12-step programs are spiritual but not religious — they do not prescribe any particular belief system. People of all faiths, as well as those with no religious beliefs, have found the Steps meaningful and effective.

When Religion Is Complicated

For some people, the relationship between addiction and religion is complicated. Guilt and shame from religious upbringing may have contributed to substance use. Others may feel that their addiction has separated them from their faith community. Still others may struggle with the concept of a higher power. These experiences are valid and deserve respectful attention in treatment. Recovery does not require any particular religious belief, but it does invite openness to growth and change.

ORTC’s Inclusive Approach

At ORTC, we respect the religious and spiritual beliefs of every client. We neither impose nor discourage religious practice. Our counselors are trained to support each individual in exploring their own relationship with spirituality in whatever form is meaningful to them. We believe that effective treatment honors the whole person, including their cultural, spiritual, and religious identity.
